Out of bed at 6:00am for 6:30 breakfast of instant coffee, bread and marmalade. We set off for El Burgo Ranero and real coffee. The tortilla patate was three inches thick and came of course with BREAD! Ada's ankle was already done in when we found out that there was no bus, train or taxi in this village. We decided to carry on, as there was no other choice. But "the Camino gives you what you need". Our hearts fell when the first vehicle passing us was a Taxi. After being blessed at four Masses to date, Pat put her prayer experience into action. Guess what? That Taxi came back! We grabbed the cab and headed for Leon, to rest the foot and find a Farmacia for a foot brace. The streets were roped off and baracaded for an event past or upcoming. The runners arrived from the University of Leon 10 km event and the barricades disappeared. Of course being Sunday, nothing was open. We were fortunate to get a Hostal right in the Centre of town, just two blocks from the Cathedral.
They must have been expecting us as shortly after our arrival there was a huge Military parade in front of the Cathedral. We toured the city, from parks to riverfront and through the old town following the Roman footprints.
At our Hostal we showered and did laundry. At 6:00pm the church bells pealed for a full 10 minutes announcing the start of a special mass and to ordain two new seminarians.
At 8:00 the streets were filled with people of all ages. We wondered if we would get into any restaurant for dinner. Since we could find no groceries all afternoon, we knew that we could not be choosy. Surprise again! We stumbled upon a fabulous restaurant and one of our best meals to date. We found vegetables, stuffed eggplant and vegetable gratin.
